So…. Shopping…. I should do that.

We live in a not huge apartment, so we don’t really have a lot of space to store food. But it looks like I’m supposed to be stocking up on things just in case we need to stay home for a bit.

To that end I decided to clear out the “pantry” Otherwise known as the large dry goods cupboard in my kitchen. Because there’s no point in buying more of something I already had. So I pulled everything out and made a project of it with Kid to write everything down and put it up here for ya’ll to make fun of because my pantry is a TRIP.

First and foremost, I don’t think I bought most of this stuff. My Mother in law passed away last year and some if not all of the weird stuff is from her and “still good” even if none of it could be combined to make a meal that anyone would want to eat.

In no particular order here is the contents of my pantry.

  • One extra large jar of olives
  • One vanilla cake mix
  • Three bags of gluten free chocolate cake mix
  • One fairly large jar of Yerba Mate
  • One jar of dates in syrup
  • One nearly empty jar of honey
  • One brick of pitted dates
  • One box Jello no-bake cheesecake mix
  • One can refried beans
  • One jar coconut milk
  • One jar of suspicious white powder (maybe sugar)
  • One box pasta shells
  • One bag brown rice noodles
  • 2.5 boxes of brown rice lasagne noodles
  • 2 cans of cranberry sauce
  • One jar of fancy cranberry jelly
  • 2 cans of sardines
  • 2 large bags of baking powder
  • 1 bag of baking yeast
  • 1 kilo of corn meal
  • 1 bag of quick oats
  • 2 boxes of vanilla jello
  • 2 boxes of pie filling (one butterscotch one vanilla)
  • 1 bag of muffin mix
  • 1 jar lemon sea salt
  • 1/2 bag of popping corn (I’m not sure if we still have a machine/device to pop this)
  • 1 package brown rice vermicelli
  • 1/4 bag of pizza crust mix
  • 1 large bag of rice
  • 2 cans of chickpeas
  • 1 pack white rice vermicelli
  • 1/2 bag of expired red velvet cake mix (to be thrown out)
  • 1 bag of oat flakes
  • 1 can of condensed milk
  • another fucking jar of olives
  • a package of wakame
  • 1/4th bag of sugar
  • 2 random mason jars with black eyed peas in them
  • 1 box of chocolate orange slices
  • 1/4th jar of red beans
  • more suspicious white powder (probably some sort of gluten free flour)
  • 1 bag buckwheat flour
  • 1 bag potato starch
  • 2 cans of escargot
  • 1 jar of honey
  • 2 bottles of salad dressing
  • 1 edible chemistry set (unopened)

I’m currently researching what other things I might buy to make use of this stuff… for instance, what do I need in order to make cornbread, because a whole kilo of corn meal seems like a good start.

I want it noted that I do not like olives, and that the big jar of them is TWO KILOS. Like WHY IS THIS IN MY HOUSE?????

Also sardines and escargot. That’s normal and not even a bit weird.

Raining again, thankfully

We did not want to leave the house this morning in the rain but I’m glad that it is. I always worry about the summer when we don’t get rain in the winter. I don’t like the forest fires and the smog and the heat.

But I love Vancouver in February.

You don’t see that back east this time of year!

And a good reminder that we are okay, even when we are not okay.

Probably a Hawk?

After I dropped off kid at school this morning I heard some crows freaking out and looked up. The crows were harassing what I think is a red tailed hawk.

Excuse the cruddy zoomed in Iphone photos, she was a good 50 feet up at the top of a tree. Just not bothered at all by the crows, she flew away when a seagull got in on the action, but didn’t go far and didn’t seem bothered by the other birds following her.

Can we also talk about how beautiful and clear it was this morning? After the deluge last night, the mountains looked so beautiful this morning.

Are we there yet?

Making New Year’s resolutions never works, or so I’m told. But I did promise my kid I’d spend more time with her and part of that is walking to school in the mornings. Thank the gods the sun is coming back and it is no longer “night” time when we leave for school. It was very very chilly this morning though the sky was beautiful and clear.

Honestly my favourite colour palette is “Winter in Vancouver.” Usually there is more grey though!
